The Philadelphia Phillies made that sentiment clear this week when they aggressively promoted Griff McGarry to the Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Armed with some of the nastiest pure stuff in the game, McGarry had a great season in 2022 across three levels. Unfortunately, the young right-hander stumbled in Wednesday’s debut, allowing three runs in two innings.
As for the staff, McGarry looked great, but the jitters in his debut seemed to get the best of him at times. His command was sporadic, walking two hitters and allowing three hits, and this breaking ball he dangled to Sox standout Bobby Dalbec for the Sox.
Still, this debut is just a stepping stone to McGarry’s move to the big leagues. It will be interesting to see how he bounces back and how the Phillies carry him forward into his September.

Triple-A: Skirrow spins impressive scoreless Triple-A debut
The Phillies found a diamond in the rough when they signed Noah Schirow as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 MLB Draft.
The young right-hander from Liberty was one of the highest-ranking prospects not picked after the draft.
He’s been a quick mover, and after just two minor league seasons, Skillow has found a home in the Lehigh Valley rotation, making his scoreless Triple-A debut on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old pitched six innings, allowing four strikeouts on just three hits and two walks. He struck out former Philly Conor Seabold, who also lasted six innings, allowing one run in the process.
Scarlow had a strong season. He’s proven to be hit too hard at times, but this season he’s hit 119 in 104.2 frames, and he’s only walked 34 in the process, giving him a 3.5 K/BB. It is suitable. His control is the standout part of his game.
Skirrow has proven that he can tango at the highest level for minors and is committed to helping major league clubs. He might profile more as his fifth or sixth starter, or perhaps as long-term relief, but every organization needs as much depth as possible.
Double-A: Another very big day for a very big man
Carlos de la Cruz continues to defy expectations and is a hot topic throughout the Phillies organization.
It was always thought that the 6-foot-8-tall man-giant couldn’t hit hard enough that his size could play to his advantage, but since joining Reading, what he’s done is All it did was peel off the baseball cover. He recorded his four hits in Reading’s doubleheader on Wednesday.
What was once a good season turned into a great one, and de la Cruz is batting .276/.342/.486 in 2022 and has 16 home runs across two levels. -old is mashing .294/.336/.532 slashes.

High-A: Li Haoyu’s Return Scores 3 Hits
After a week without baseball action against one of the Phillies’ newest prospects, Hao Yu Li returned to three-hit form Wednesday, including an RBI triple.

His hitting tool speaks for itself, and his power has surprised many this season. Combining these traits with his mature approach at bat, the Phillies have found themselves pretty much the perfect hitter among young guys.
It will be interesting to see where he ends up being positioned. Many scouts believe he plays slightly above average second base, which seems to be where he most logically profiles.
Single A: Phillies fourth-rounder continues to do well
Phillies fourth-rounder Alex McFarlane comes late. The team has yet to get a chance to put his weapon to the test, but his early return has yet to match what the Phillies expected of him.
Still, the 21-year-old from Miami has shown something amazing. McFarlane’s fastball topped his 98–99 range and still sells his three pitch shapes that are at least considered positive. The problem is that he still doesn’t know how to give orders to them.
He pitched three innings on Wednesday, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks. he struck out.
The Phillies likely have concrete plans to work with him in the offseason and will certainly add and remove from his pitch mix as they see fit. Inside has become a recent attraction. Perhaps McFarlane is starting to develop it? It would certainly fit well in his arsenal.
