Merced University opens new agricultural technology complex

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Thursday on the Merced University campus to celebrate the opening of the new Raj Kahlon Agriculture and Industrial Technology Complex.

The new 29,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will train students and prepare them for local jobs in agriculture, industrial technology, and related workforce programs.

Merced College Dean Chris Viteri said:

“We are in the breadbasket of the world, so they will influence the world we all feed on.

This building is the first new addition to the campus in over a decade.

Merced University said the $25 million complex will be home to multiple academic programs and faculty will begin the process of moving into offices this semester. Classes will be held at the facility this fall and spring.

Local and state dignitaries attended Thursday’s event and included Congressman Adam Gray, California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Consul General of India Dr. TV Nagendra Prasad.

According to a Merced University news release, the new facility will include multiple academic disciplines, including agricultural business, computer technology, animal science, computer technology and information systems, electrical/electronics, HVAC technology, industrial technology, crop science, and environmental horticulture. Contains the program.

Raj Kahlon, a local farmer named after the complex, has pledged $5 million to support programs within the complex. According to Merced University, the endowment is the largest in the university’s history.

“For our agricultural industry to continue to thrive in an uncertain future, we need advanced technology, and we need students with the ability to use that technology,” Carlon said in a news release. .

“Merced University plans to play a vital role in the education and preparation of its employees, and this new building will help ensure the future success of our local students and the community as a whole.”

A highlight of the complex is a 7,500-square-foot courtyard for outdoor events. There is also a zoology room designed to accommodate small farm animals that can be brought into the classroom environment for demonstration, and an adjacent pen for larger animals.

The complex includes a solarium that allows for plant science experiments and what the university calls a cohesive administrative area. It has a staff lounge, waiting room, and meeting room.
