Oregon blew out to Georgia, then came back and blew out eastern Washington in week two. In the Ducks home opener, they showed a lot of what they can do this season.
Here are the 5 points we got from Saturday’s contest.
1. Simple is better
The simplest things aren’t the most fun. But they can win soccer matches. Those who watched Georgia’s game probably thought Oregon did not execute their fundamentals well. So Lanning went back to basics and showed how simple it works.
“We said we wanted to keep it simple and better. That was what this week was all about. It was about fundamentals and technique. We saw a lot of that coming into the game.”
The Oregon offense gained 604 total yards on many simple passes and gutsy runs.
2. Not reaching the limit
After the game, I asked Lanning if he had any issues he wanted to address in practices or games.
“We are not playing the best football by any means. We were scoring points, we were able to make passes without jeopardizing the ball. Those things were certainly positives, but it’s still challenging to move forward. It’s getting harder and harder. It will keep going and we have to keep playing better.
In short, yes and no. Oregon looked much better in terms of fundamentals. They were fast, physical and motivated. But they know they are far from the ceiling. And they’ll have to play at least that level in his Top 25 matchup against BYU, No. 12 next week in Autzen. Then head to the Palouse to start conference play against Washington State.
3. Even if you win by a large margin, I want you to come back a little
This wasn’t a perfect game by anyone’s standards. But if you win by 56 points, you’re probably doing something right. But Lanning would rather he win by 70 points.
“We know we have 14 points on the scoreboard that we want to get back. There are definitely things we can do better. Standards are our standards and we have to keep measuring ourselves towards that. We can definitely get better. It was good to see.We play the physical brand of football.”
Lanning knows that Oregon has always held to a high standard of beating the West. After all, Pac-12 and his being one of the best brands in the country is what brought him here.

4. The duck keeps rolling on its back
Again, we saw running backs cycle the game. Five men on Saturday he scored a 7–9 carry. Sean Dollars I got nine. Marquez Irving When Noah Whittington We got 8 each. Byron Cardwell When Kilohana Hasenritter 7 of each. So far, Lanning seems to like the many backers contributing.
“It keeps you fresh and allows you to play at a very high level consistently, and if you feel someone is out there and they’re out of shape, you can go there and perform at a high level. make it possible.”
So while not Lois Freeman Also LaMichael James, Oregon has options. And in the coming weeks, we’ll see if Oregon starts running backs by committee or one back separates as a bell cow.
5. Thompson looks solid in his 2022 debut
If you’ve been to Autzen Saturday, you’ve heard how the crowd got louder. Ty Thompson I’ve run out of fields in this game.During and after Georgia’s game, many fans wanted to see Thompson play or do it again. Bo Nicks.
“Ty did a great job tonight. He had fun,” Lanning said at a press conference.
It looks like the open quarterback competition won’t be played again, but this glimpse of Thompson will continue to encourage fans to call out Thompson, especially if the Knicks struggle again in the coming weeks.
This was the win Oregon needed. For both their record and confidence. Oregon is looking to build on this season next week with his Top 25 matchup against the BYU Cougars in Autzen. Kickoff is set for 12:30 PM PT.
