Used furniture marketplace Kaiyo is expanding its services to San Diego County. The New York City-based startup offers a full-service platform and discreet delivery that eliminates the need to drive furniture to a parking lot to sell it to a stranger.

Convenience is a key element of the company’s business model.

If you decide to sell your furniture, submit it to our marine team for inspection. Once accepted, sellers can schedule item pick-up, cleaning, professional photography, and storage with Kaiyo, all free of charge. Sellers can wait until the item is sold to get a percentage of the final sale or accept an immediate offer from Kaiyo.

Shoppers can browse Kaiyo’s site for used furniture from brands such as West Elm, CB2 and Restoration Hardware and pay the company for shipping.

Kaiyo founder and CEO Alpay Koralturk is a serial entrepreneur who launched the company in 2014 after moving multiple times in New York City. He had to buy new furniture because there was no one-stop shop for him to buy used items.

In addition to creating a more reliable and streamlined process, one of his goals is also to provide consumers with greener options through the second-hand market, he said.

“Furniture is one of the largest waste categories in the United States, meaning millions of pounds of furniture end up in landfills each year. Plus, there is virtually no recycling of used furniture,” Koralturk said in a press release. said in “By expanding to San Diego, we can further our mission.”

Koralturk said the company saw a shift in demand for office supplies early in the pandemic.

“These days people are becoming more and more price conscious against inflation,” he said in a telephone interview.

Kaiyo uses artificial intelligence to price items below their original purchase price, but at a rate that is comparable to market value and condition.

Current do-it-yourself options for reselling anything big or small include eBay, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or Offer Up.

Koralturk pointed out that there are other resale platforms for fine furniture, such as 1stdibs and Sotheby’s Home. But they offer more expensive items, and Kaiyo is filling the gap by offering full-service options, he said.

If the seller does not accept Kaiyo’s immediate offer, they receive a share of the final price after the sale.In this revenue-sharing model, Kaiyo makes a small percentage of sales compared to other marketplaces to illustrate its services. Koralturk says he takes a large percentage of the cost (between 10% and 60% depending on the price). Kaiyo charges the buyer between $19 and $79 for shipping the white gloves, depending on the size of the item.

He said the company has been eyeing the West Coast market for some time, noting that many Californians have a keen sense of style and design that makes way for service opportunities.

This expansion was largely driven by Kaiyo’s $36 million in Series B funding earlier this year, bringing its total funding to date to nearly $50 million. This summer, Kaiyo launched in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Located in Chino Hills, he operates out of a 78,418-square-foot warehouse.
