One week to go before Notre Dame’s long-awaited season opener in Ohio, Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator Tommy Reese After practice on Saturday, I spent some time answering questions.
Reese was broad in some answers and more concise in others.
Can a first-time starter quarterback run Tempo? Tyler Buchnerwhose name is half the length of Reese’s answer.
“We’ll find out on Saturday,” Reese said.
What is Notre Dame’s offensive identity with Buchner at quarterback?
“I think we’ll find out in a week,” Rees said. “As you know, I’m not going to give you any information, but I’m sure we’ll find out in a week.”
Notre Dame starting left fielder Jarrett Paterson Suspended from activities for about a week and a half due to a sprained leg. He was wearing a t-shirt and shorts and walking boots after Saturday’s practice with his uniformed teammates.
“It’s up to the coach (Marcus) freemanReese spoke of Patterson’s status on Sept. 3. “I do not answer those questions.”
What if we run back?
Four Available Scholarship Running Backs Available for Reese and Offense are Juniors chris tyley,Sophomore Logan Diggs When Audric Estimfreshman Gibran Payne.
“Right now I feel like I have three (or four) backs that really help me win games,” Reese said. is our job and also during the course of the game you can start to feel kinda ok today this guy is running well let’s be with him very specific to each They have roles, they’re very specific parts of the game plan, and they allow us to diversify our touches a little bit.
Estime is one of the least-known players after carrying the ball for 60 yards just seven times as a freshman in 2021. After watching him at Notre Dame’s fall training camp in Coming Out, it’s easy for him to feel like the party is imminent.
“It’s probably a heavy word to announce,” Rees said. We’ve worked very hard to be able to do that, but again, there are three guys that we know can play, two of them playing more than Audric. , Audric did a great job throughout the camp.”
Diggs is Notre Dame’s second most experienced running back. He achieved his 52 carries for 230 yards as a freshman in 2021, but is usually reserved for quarterbacks because he tore his shoulder glenoid labrum in his game of blue gold in April. I was encouraged to put on my red “contactless” jersey and start camp. Diggs ditched red and put on blue a week or so before him.
“He’s done a great job for us,” Reese said of the Louisiana native. I think he’s taking hits I think he looks comfortable I think he’s hungry to get back in there I think if you’re out for a long time you’re actually out twice I think you definitely lose the feeling of being part of the group when you’re not in. Now that he’s back and things are going well, he’s really keen to play and I know he can play at a high level. I want to prove it.”
Those backs are running behind a line developed by Harry Hystan who built some great lines in his first stint at South Bend (2012-17).
Notre Dame’s offensive line is the most improved aspect of the team this year. Take it to the bank. Getting him back was very important to Reese and the offense.
“It’s really cool, like at some point in camp it started to look like it clicked. Okay, this is exactly what it looks like with Coach Heistant leading that group,” Reese explained. “You can see how they move, how they get off the ball, how they communicate, how they manipulate. It’s the reason I’m here.”

“I’m thrilled he’s back,” Reese continued. “He was a great support to me and obviously a great leader in that room. He had a huge impact on their improvement.”
Camp Loss of the Captain Avery Davis ACL tear thinned the group before adding safety Xavier Watts into the mix. Sophomore Jaden Thomas and veteran Joe Wilkins Jr. Despite an injury during camp, Reese likes his job as receiver coach in his first year Chancy Stucky Did.
“I think we did a great job throughout camp,” Reese said. “Coach Stuck has really improved that room. He’s done a really good job of making the players better in areas where they’re technically required. That’s why he’s here.”
“Looking at the first group, I think the guys jogging are in a good mood,” he continued. “I’m happy to have (Jaden Thomas) back. He gave us a really good camp. Chute, we are happy with the people there. I try to put them where they can do their best.”
tight end coach Gerard Parker Another new coach on the offensive staff. He served as his offensive coordinator at West Virginia University for two years before Parker was hired as Notre Dame’s tight end coach. Reese was able to rely on Parker during their time together.
“He came over and started running,” Reese said of Parker. “He’s been incredibly helpful to me. It’s been great for our room. It’s like having a conversation about different areas of the game plan and going into the game plan and saying, ‘Okay, here we go.’ Let’s kick these back and forth. He’s an invaluable part of what we’re doing now. He’s sharp, has a great attitude and gets along well with our players. I trust him as I have worked with him for 10 years and he has done a great job since he came in.
“We all come from different backgrounds,” Reese continued. “We have a saying, ‘When everyone thinks alike, no one thinks deeply. I think I’ve said this a million times and I don’t act or pretend like I have all the answers, I don’t want to know all the answers. You need input and perspective and different ways of looking at things so you can do better for your team. We had some route ideas, some route nuances, some drill ideas and it really enlightened what we do as an offense but without him they wouldn’t come to mind So I think having people with different perspectives and different paths will ultimately lead to good staff.”
