North Medford head coach Nathan Chin saw West Lynn’s offensive potential firsthand when he made his sideline debut for the Black Tornados 12 months ago.
Lyons, in his second year in charge, did nothing Friday night to discourage such thoughts.
Led by new quarterback Sam Leavitt and star receiver Mark Humper, No. 2 Westlin’s powerful offense scored early and many scored as North suffered a 52–7 loss at Willamette High School. For , the first half came to 45 points. Eugene.
“We definitely ran into one of the top teams in the state,” says Chin. “We had some accidents early on that didn’t help, so we hit the gut early on, so it took us a little while to try and catch the wind.”
Friday night’s game, originally scheduled to be played at Spiegelberg Stadium, was moved north to Eugene after Medford’s air quality deteriorated as a result of wildfire smoke.
West Lynn (1-0) scored on every possession in the first half. Leavitt (a Westview transfer who has verbally promised to play at Washington State next season) completed his six passes in the first and two touchdowns that put him 12-for-16. Passed before half time.
Leavitt and Humper, who threw for nearly 2,300 yards and 28 touchdowns last season, fueled the Lions’ first half onslaught.
The Lions took a 7–0 lead less than four minutes into the game when Kofi Kuame capped the opening drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. After North (0-1) went 3-and-out on the first possession, Humper, who had three touchdowns on his reception last year against the Tornados, punted for 61 yards on his return. West his Lynn lead.
The West Lynn made it 17-0 on Gage Hurlich’s 34-yard field goal before Humper’s 11-yard TD run on Rivers gave the Lions a 24-point first quarter win.
“I’ve always told my kids that when you’re playing against the top teams, you shouldn’t start too late,” Chin said. It should have all cylinders running early on, but it didn’t. “
“They are doing a great job,” Chin continued. He does a really good job of finding windows (to throw). “
Senior quarterback Kaiden Lacy made his first start for the Black Tornadoes after playing his junior season at Eaglepoint, but started 1-for-5 in the air. His sixth pass attempt turned out to be a 30-yard pick 6 by Westrin linebacker Earl Ingle on the first play of the second quarter.
Levitt threw touchdown passes to Humper and Wiley Donnerberg for 17 and 7 yards, respectively, to push the Lions lead to 45–0.
North unofficially finished with almost as many penalty yards (30 yards) as he recorded 39 on the ground in the first half.
“There were times when we weren’t handling their slant game and had some drop passes early on,” Chin said. “They would have all been challenging, tough catches, but if we could have made those catches and worked through some things up front, we could have moved the chain and held the ball a little longer. .
North appeared on the scoreboard late in the third quarter when Lacy fended off the pressure by going up the pocket and connecting with wide-open tight end Kellen Toomey for a 35-yard touchdown pass.
Lacy passed 7-of-16 for 101 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Tommy caught the pass on his three occasions for 49 yards and Conor Cesaro caught the pass on four occasions for 28 yards.
Black Tornado senior running back Ty Pugliano gained 66 yards on 16 carries.
“I think our biggest message is, No. 1, you have to learn from this and correct mistakes that happened early in the game.” is that we must always look forward after learning from what happened, and after next week’s non-conference game, we have a tough conference schedule ahead of us, so we can take things on our own. So you have to learn quickly.”
