Exeter — Strolling downtown through Lara Bricker’s lens means only one thing: searching for the perfect crime scene.
“Where can a man die?” she asks herself as she walks down Water Street.
Bricker hails from Vermont but has called Exeter home for the past 25 years. With her long experience as a reporter, private investigator, and crime podcaster coloring her resume, it now seems fitting that she is a writer of mystery novels.
Climb calls out to her.
“When I started working as a full-time journalist, I immediately fell in love with police reporting and I love breaking news,” she said. I was intrigued.”
She got her start in true crime, but is now working on fiction.
Bricker will release the first book in the Piper Greene Exeter Mystery series, Dead on Deadline, in August 2021. The book, with Exeter in the background, became her No. 1 best-selling novel at the Water Street Bookstore.
She is currently preparing to launch a sequel, The Last Curtain.

‘The Last Curtain’ will be released on October 1st
In the first book, the series’ protagonist — curious and inquisitive journalist Piper Greene — solves the murder of her news editor Charlotte Campbell. The victims’ bodies were dressed in British Redcoat uniforms and hung from the top of the historic City Hall during American Independence Day.
The second book starts where the first book ended.

All is well for Piper until he receives an interview invitation from the reclusive Harry Trott, known as the Birdman of Exeter.
However, when Piper arrived, instead of finding Harry, she found a slouched body sitting in a chair next to an expensive bottle of champagne.

Once again, Piper is determined to uncover the truth.
Who killed Roy? You’ll find out on his October 1st when the novel hits Water Street bookstores and Amazon bookshelves. Readers can pre-order personalized copies at bookstores and The Last Curtain on Kindle.

From the historic town hall to the inn by the bandstand, Bricker said inspiration for her series is taken from the town. increase.
“The Last Curtain” was inspired by an event she attended at The Word Barn, where she chatted with a bird expert.
When conceiving the lead character, Piper Greene, Bricker “wanted a character who fears nothing. She’s very nosy and very curious, never pushy, but she does it well.” ”
It’s no coincidence that both Piper and Bricker are fond of shrimp cocktails and are served with Old Bay Seasoning. Bricker said people she knows see her element in her personality.
“Piper Green is like a version of me on steroids,” she said. will be poured in.”

Bricker on Piper Greene’s writing process
The deadline for completing a book is about a year, which is typical in the publishing industry, Bricker said.
“My process was when we were doing promotions, marketing plans, etc[at the end of Volume 1]we were brainstorming and outlining Volume 2,” she said. “I need a deadline, so I give myself a timeline. Writing something like 75,000 words is a different process.”
Bricker’s writing process is characterized by a different way of thinking about writing and revising.
“I just sit down and write very fast,” she explained. “When you’re doing something this big, you can’t go back the next day and fix a chapter you wrote[the day before]you just keep writing it before. If you change anything, make a note of it.” .”
When faced with writer’s block, Bricker said she would get over it.
“It’s hard[because I have to write],” she said. “You can sit there and be like, ‘I have writer’s block and I can’t write today.’ is.”
Bricker said the hardest thing about writing a book is “when you have to kill the person you love.”
“There was something I definitely wanted to include in this novel[because]it’s great for the plot,” she said. You can save it for another book, but it doesn’t work for this one. ”

With just over a month to go until The Final Curtain’s release, Bricker is gearing up for a pre-release party and a post-release pop-up signing.
According to Bricker, “The Last Act” isn’t the end of the mystery series.
She’s already working on ideas for a third book, and is also considering adding audiobook versions of “Dead on Deadline” and “The Final Curtain.”
“I don’t know how many books the series will have, but I don’t know, because Exeter continues to provide excellent material to fictionalize,” Bricker said.
