Yobou interviewed for MBA admissions at Wharton, Michigan Ross, and UVA Durden last year, but ultimately lost to each school’s MBA program.
Sandy Kreisberg, founder of HBSGuru.com and leading MBA admissions counselor, thinks he knows why. That’s that damn standardized test. Yobou has a GRE score of 312 with a quantitative score in the 50th percentile and a verbal score in the 89th percentile.
His tough love advice: Take the test again and again. “If he can get the 80th percentile on both sides of the GRE, the story changes completely,” advises Kreisberg on this episode of his Friday’s With Sandy. “When schools see your 50th percentile quant score, they start questioning whether you can do the job. Bite the bullet, man.Take as many GREs as you can.It can change your life.”
It’s hard to imagine a simple test getting in the way of such a viable MBA candidate. TK earned her 3.8 in Accounting from Quinnipiac University in Connecticut and a master’s degree in the same subject from Bentley College outside Boston where she earned a 3.8. He is responsible for planning and analyzing a network of schools that help prepare West African students for the rigors of university education abroad. The organization works with his 3,000 students and has annual revenue of about $11 million.
With roots in Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa, Yobou brings a distinct, affable and unmistakable professional presence that will bring diverse perspectives to the MBA classroom. He hopes to use his MBA to move into either investment banking or consulting.
This year, he is reapplying to all three schools he turned down a year ago, and is also targeting two MBA programs in Canada: the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto and the Desotel School of Management at McGill University in Montreal.
