Donovan Mitchell was suddenly traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday. It’s not an unreasonable takeaway. Nicks finally has to actually hook one of those big fish he’s always trolling.
But a wrong deal can have as much impact on a franchise as a right one. Of all the stars the Knicks have acquired, was Mitchell the one they’ve been chasing more or less lately?
First off, are you sure Donovan Mitchell is a superstar? he is attacking He’s proven he’s doing great in the playoffs, and that’s very important. But Mitchell-Jarren Branson has a very small backcourt and sounds defensively vulnerable. Acquiring any of the future first-round picks that Utah reportedly wanted would have greatly hampered their ability to chase another All-Star. down the line.
So if the Knicks’ roster including Mitchell is near-finished, how good is the combination of Mitchell and Branson, especially without Barrett’s size and defensive support? You should expect that. Still, at best, you’ll be looking at a low-end playoff team in a fully stacked Eastern Conference.
Utah Acquires Cleveland Deal — Collin Sexton, Lauri Markkanen, 2022 No. 14 Overall Pick Ochai Agbazi, Three Unprotected First-Round Picks, and Right to Swap Two Future Picks — is the better deal New York hoped to offer. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, this is:
When guard Immanuel Quickley was suggested in the trade to replace Grimes, Utah wanted three unprotected first-round draft picks as part of the package, sources said. Those packages included two second-round picks, two pick swaps, and two expiring contracts from the third team, sources said. Transferring rights to a third team would have spared Utah the burden of Fournier’s remaining $37 million, sources said.
Danny Ainge was a certified thief in these negotiations and for me New York was wise not to give in. Again, Mitchell is a really nice guy. But how good is he? The price of his acquisition wouldn’t have left New York’s basket empty (he has eight trade-eligible future picks), but it’s a controversial future pick to participate in future trade talks. There were only 3 left. Oklahoma City and Houston could be years away from all other offers.
To be clear, I’m not saying that Knicks going all-in on Mitchell was clearly going in the wrong direction. New York reportedly believed the Branson-Mitchell duo had attracted another star. There is room for debate as to whether or not
Ultimately, had the Knicks been able to keep Barrett, I would have favored adding more unprotected picks to acquire Mitchell. I think Barrett can grow to be an All-Star and if Branson becomes an All-Star level player then we have your big three. You can package him in. Alternatively, you can trade Barrett. This was still enough wiggle room to feel comfortable.
but give up valet When A bunch of unprotected picks was a bridge too far. that very. Once disappointment with another star subsides, Knicks fans will have to see or see they are in a pretty good position to move forward. A very good player and takes the ball out of Randall’s exclusive hands. Barrett has time to continue developing, and most importantly, these future trade-eligible draft picks are still in the holster.
There could be a massive cap spike in 2025, when new TV deals start, and New York could be nearing its maximum space in years. You have options. You extend him if he is worth it. If not, he becomes a trade piece. It’s called flexibility, and it’s better than depleting the asset pool and overextending yourself just for Mitchell to become the No. 6 seed.
Repeat one last time. A rational thinker can challenge this stance I have taken. The Knicks have to have a true star at some point, and Mitchell is a star. In my opinion, he’s not a superstar, but he’s a legitimate star. If you think the Knicks should have given up more of their unprotected picks and barretts and thought about the rest later, it’s understandable, especially with Houston and OKC lurking as monsters to carve out trades in the years to come. Not a place to fall, but this is not a definite situation. This was a tough decision either way. Only time will tell if the Knicks made the right choice.
