Making a new hinge mechanism that is slimmer and lighter while remaining sturdy is one of the biggest challenges in developing the latest foldable phones, Samsung executives say.
Dr. Choi Won-joon, head of the flagship product R&D team in Samsung’s Mobile Experience division, said:
“Creating a more compact and lightweight hinge without sacrificing durability was a big challenge.
After about 20 failed attempts over the course of almost a year, the developers were finally able to come up with an entirely new hinge system called the Spiral Hinge, Choi said.
Samsung has launched its latest foldable smartphone in about 40 countries, hoping the new product can revitalize lackluster global smartphone sales amid high inflation.
The company has received a record Rs 10 lakh pre-orders for its newly launched Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4 foldable smartphones in India.
Samsung said its fourth-generation foldable device broke the record for pre-orders last year in India, demonstrating strong interest in the new device.
